And deep down, somewhere in the nether regions of our consciousness, we want to leave a legacy - something that says: Here’s my life’s work. It made a difference. I created something GREAT. I wasn’t just a selfish little clod of ailments and grievances.
But we don’t go around shouting, “I want to build a legacy!” Oh no, we keep that our little secret. We hold it close to our chests. Why?
The problem with greatness
We say that we want to achieve greatness, but there’s this little problem: If you want to achieve greatness, then it has to be more than just a job that pays the bills. It has to be more than just business. Achieving greatness requires a personal commitment. Put simply, no CEO, athlete or artist has ever reached great heights without putting their hearts into it.
There's a pesky little voice in your head that goes, “You’re meant to do something bigger.” But it doesn’t tell you what it is. You try to google it, but three hours later, you have a splitting headache. And still no answer. You want clarity, but all you find is confusion.
It can feel like the edge of despair. But this is also the edge of greatness, if you hold the space to reflect and learn from it. You've been searching for answers in all the wrong places. You've been hoping that Google will tell you your PURPOSE - what you are born to do. What we’re talking about here is not big data. This is deep data. It’s your future wanting to emerge from the murky depths of your mind. If it makes you feel lost and directionless, that’s good news. The mystery of your legacy is calling you. To take action. You might not feel ready: “Why should I do that?” I can give you all the tried-and-true reasons: to live your best life, to fulfil your highest potential. But only you know the truth: Because you can’t not do it.
