Bring back your organisation’s magic

There was a large political disruption last week. The ouster of Malaysia's Prime Minister, Najib Razak marked the first time Barisan Nasional (BN) lost power since its independence in 1957. Najib is accused of dipping his hands in the $3.5billion 1MDB-cookie-jar, while prices for everything except kangkung (water spinach) has risen.

Out with the old, in with the older. The newly elected party, Pakatan Harapan is led by 92-year-old Tun Mahathir, who was Prime Minister from 1981 to 2002. When asked why he returned to politics, he said, “I don’t think I would be doing that if everything is fine in the country. I have a responsibility.”

This story reminded me of another courageous comeback story - Steve Jobs’ return to Apple in 1996. Steve Jobs took control of Apple at a time when it was 90 days from bankruptcy.

In The Lost Interview recorded in 1995, a year before his return, Steve Jobs spoke about the magic in Apple and how it lost its way. “The company forgets what it means to build great products. The product genius that brought them to the monopolistic position gets rotted out.”

When you feel a responsibility to make things better, you step up even though you may not have all the answers.
